Ribbed Baby Jacket

Inspiration came from Sandra, who knitted a beautiful one in blue. This one is for a girl who will be born this month. I didn’t want to use wool but I was looking for a yarn similar to the original pattern. In my yarnshop they suggested me a yarn called Pop Corn from the Portuguese brand Rosários 4 made of... corn fibre! The gauge for this yarn is exactly the same of the original yarn, which have turned things easier for me.

Receita: Disponível em Prima
Tamanho: 0-3 meses
Fio: 2 novelos de Rosários 4 Pop Corn (100% fibra de milho) 50g/110m em lilás (cor 23)
Agulhas: 5 mm e 4 ½ mm

Pattern: Available at Prima
Size: 0-3 months
Yarn: 2 balls of Rosários 4 Pop Corn (100% corn fibre) 50g/110m in lilac (shade 23)
Needles: 5 mm and 4 ½ mm

A simple and elegant pattern, very easy and quick of knitting. I’ve copied Sandra’s suggestion and I added 2 buttons. It is really easy, I recommend to all that are looking for a nice and quick gift for a baby.

Sobre o fio / About the yarn

Natural fibres are definitely a trend and this Portuguese brand "Rosários 4" is one of the most innovative. This yarn is very interesting and it is also a good substitute for wool, it is spongy, smoother than cotton and its thread is made of several filaments, as bamboo yarn, but not so satin-like as this one.

An important note: DO NOT IRON THIS YARN! despite what instructions say. Not even at very low temperature! I discovered that by the worst way when I was going to iron the work (at very low temperature) and I’ve got a real “popcorn” effect with fibres melting and breaking… Fortunately, I realized what was going on and it was in a part of the work that allowed me to remake only that part.

O local afectado, com as fibras ressequidas / The ironed part and withered fibres

O fio atingido após desmanchar / The ironed yarn after undo the affected part

Após o mal feito há que resolver... e refazer / After a disaster you must try to solve it... remaking

Considerations:
1) Despite what instructions say, test always in the swatch!
2) Although similarities between yarns (cotton is a vegetal fibre too...) each yarn is different – always be suspicious from new and still unknown yarns!
3) Keep this doubt is healthy and can save you lots of work!

I’ve sent an email to the brand relating the succeeded and the answer was immediate and very kind. The initial tests showed that iron could be used but meanwhile other consumers also complained about the same problem. I can say that I was very satisfied with the manner the company treated my complaint. Here stays the alert for other knitters and all the respect I have for the brand. In spite of that annoyance, I'm very satisfied with this yarn and I strongly recommend it as a nice alternative to wool for summer baby clothes. Just remember do not iron! ;)

Besides, I discovered that this shade is what I was looking for to knit a beret from an old Marie Claire Idées issue for myself...
